There is a 5k walk-a-thon on October 11, 2009 in Johnson Park in Piscataway. The money raised goes to support the Mental Health Association in NJ. This is a group that provides resource information to anybody who calls or logs on to their web site, they do advocacy work, education and training for the citizens of NJ. They are a free service that I have used on many occassions at work.
One problem I see with many walk-a-thons or other fund raising events, is that the organizers are often "preaching to the choir". I would like to see people come to the event who have never used the mental health system (and hopefully will never have to). The reality is, everybody is impacted by mental health concerns on some level, those concerns may individual, or may be through loved ones, friends, co-workers, etc...
